'Resident Evil 4' review: Half a step back for Capcom's remakes

THE Resident Evil 4 the remake starts out strong. Updated aiming mechanics and a new infusion of processing power make this the most exciting version of RE4 Capcom has always delivered, and Leon Kennedy looks better than ever, even with his new chin implant. The remake works well for the first few hours, as Leon shoots and fights his way through the foggy Spanish village where the beaches turned the inhabitants into murderous tentacle monsters. These early stages, set between twisting wooden buildings and the shores of a twisting cave system, set the game’s gory tone and strike a satisfying balance between asset management, puzzle solving, and modern handgun shooting. third person.

As the game gets more complex, it gets clunky. Capcom’s approach to modernization RE4 is to add more enemies, cramped environments and less ammo drops – all of this could result in a high voltage action experience, if his commands were consistent. As it stands, the RE4 remake is plagued with slow animations and frustrating combat sequences. Leon constantly feels underpowered, unable to evade basic attacks or land a shot reliably.

Resident Evil 4 set the standard for action-horror games when it was released in 2005, and the remake shines when it embraces the innovations of the original: precision over-the-shoulder shooting and an atmosphere of combat and terror . However, the remake quickly loses focus, and it seems much of Capcom’s effort has gone into upgrading enemies and environments, leaving Leon in the dust of the GameCube era.

THE RE4 remake introduces new boss fights and glow-headed enemies, and it also lets Leon parry powerful attacks. Sometimes. The parry ability is only available if Leon has a knife waiting, and when the prompt appears it is easily interrupted by environmental nudges, other enemies’ actions, and Leon’s own animations. Like most of Leon’s moves, the parry ability is just too inconsistent to be satisfying, and it generally does nothing to increase the tension of fight scenes.

The remake often places Leon at the center of a swarm of enemies, with no ability to quickly dodge incoming attacks. He has to shoot or fight his way through the horde – but he runs like he’s knee-deep in mud, and even a bullet to the head doesn’t always stop a rushing Cultist. Meanwhile, enemy attacks always interrupts Leon. The slow motion is authentic to the experience of the original four Resident Evil games, and it’s something the RE2 And RE3 the remakes cater specifically, offering updated controls and environments that feel right at home on modern hardware. Compared to these games, RE4 feels unfinished, or at least unrefined.

Ashley and Leon are fleeing an explosion on a castle turret in Resident Evil 4.

Capcom

A boss fight that Capcom has reimagined for the remake is against Méndez, the mutant priest with the extra long spine. In the original, Méndez launches a series of repetitive attacks from the rafters of a burning slaughterhouse. In the remake, Méndez steps back to throw flaming logs and exploding oil barrels at Leon, before rushing in for close combat and alternating these positions a few times. Even though the remake’s environment is larger, it’s filled with flames that interrupt Leon’s actions whenever he touches them. Méndez moves fast, as do the items he throws, while Leon has a slow dash ability, no way to quickly dodge, and sluggish animations for reloading, picking up items, hitting fire, and stabbing enemies. Méndez appears to be a completely redone character here; Leon, not so much. This results in a frustrating boss fight.

I died several times trying to defeat Méndez – and that’s when Capcom pranked me. I was playing Standard, and during my Méndez death screens, the game started prompting me to enable Assisted Mode, the lowest difficulty setting. I don’t usually do this during exams, but a maddening dozen attempts later and I gave in, pressing OK without reading the fine print. The assisted mode makes the game incredibly forgiving, and I easily defeated Méndez in the next round.

And then I couldn’t change my difficulty settings at all. Keep this in mind: assisted mode is permanent in RE4.

I played a few more minutes on the lowest difficulty setting, but it definitely felt like a different game than the Standard version, devoid of tension or risk. Luckily I was on PlayStation 5, which only syncs saves to the cloud when you quit a game. I turned off the console’s internet connection, closed the game, then downloaded the old save file before changing of parameters. Then I defeated Méndez the old fashioned way, on standard difficulty, and continued with a new fear of accidentally going into assisted mode in my soul.

Permanent mode switching down is a standard feature of Resident Evil games, but I find it disconcerting. It is all the more confusing that RE4 actively encourages standard players to try assisted mode in loading screens and death menus. I asked Capcom why the team designed RE4 this way, and a spokesperson said, “The difficulty mode a player completes the game on has ramifications for in-game achievements and trophies.” That doesn’t entirely answer the question for me: many action games have dynamic difficulty settings without disrupting achievements, and that answer doesn’t answer my perception that Capcom prioritizes trophy integrity over to accessibility.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Capcom

While we’re in the complaints department, I also want to encourage all PS5 players to turn off controller sounds in the audio settings. This applies to RE4 and literally every other game with this feature. Why is the DualSense volume so loud all the time? Please someone make it stop.

That’s what the RE4 remake reduced me to: a begging mess of unfulfilled nostalgia and frustration. It’s not a terrible game, but it’s not seamless either. This adds enemy variety and cool environments, but Leon’s bullets consistently hit their targets without dealing damage, his movements are clunky, and his new parry ability is only semi-functional. The game clearly lays out battle strategies for each scene, but then its mechanics get in the way, punishing the player in the process. All in all, the word for the RE4 redo is inconsistent.
