THE OnePlus 11 is a powerful Android phone with a great design and handy extras like super-fast charging. But these days, a good phone also needs to take great photos. The OnePlus 11’s triple camera array takes high-quality photos, which you can read more about in the Full review of the OnePlus 11. But I also wanted to see how it compares to its main rival, the Google Pixel 7 Pro.
The Pixel 7 Pro has won a coveted award CNET Editors’ Choice Award last year due to its specs and great camera, so I knew it would be a fun “shoot-out” to see which captures the best photos.
I loaded up both handsets and headed off to beautiful Edinburgh, Scotland to see what was going on.

The OnePlus 11 photo above is certainly more vibrant than the Pixel 7 Pro image, but it looks oversaturated, with a fairly teal tone skyward. As a result, the OnePlus image looks less natural. This is something I found generally with the OnePlus 11 camera while testing it for my review.

Switching to the ultra-wide lens, the OnePlus 11 again produced a more vibrant shot. (See above.) It’s not that it’s a bad photo – if you want bright, punchy shots of your friends having fun, this is fine for you. But it’s worth bearing in mind if you prefer more natural shots like the Pixel’s.

Both phones captured bright and well-exposed scenes in the photos above. But the OnePlus 11’s HDR is too aggressive in lifting shadows, which makes for a fairly “processed” look. It again produced a blue sky that leans more into teal tones, while the Pixel 7 Pro’s shot looks more realistic overall.

Take a look above where it’s the exact same story when switching to the ultra-wide lens; too high shadows and muted highlights, which makes the image look HDR, to my eyes.

I also don’t think the OnePlus 11 did well in the photo above, but mainly because of the color balance which resulted in a rather teal blue sky and a yellow-green tint to the buildings on the left.

One of the things I found most disappointing in my OnePlus 11 review is that it doesn’t have a proper telephoto zoom, but only has 2x zoom for portraits. I love a zoom lens on a phone because it lets you find interesting compositions in your surroundings that might be lost on your friends and their wide-angle cameras alone. In the photo above, the OnePlus 11’s 2x lens goes no further to get a close-up view of the buildings against the river.

With its 5x optical zoom, the Pixel 7 Pro can get a much closer view. Check out the photo of the Pixel above. I always love taking pictures with the Pixel’s zoom lens because I feel I can be a lot more creative with the zoom than with just a wide-angle lens.

The OnePlus 11 got a brighter image above, which is especially noticeable on the main building in the center of the frame. I think the colors are also better and there is usually more detail to be seen in the image.

Both images above suffer from severe reflections when shooting into bright light sources, but most phones tend to have this problem. It’s not really worse on either phone, so that’s something you’ll need to keep in mind when shooting at night.
What is the best camera phone?
Throughout my testing, I’ve found that the OnePlus 11 consistently delivers high-saturated shots fairly consistently, and displays heavy HDR processing that lifts shadows and dulls highlights to a sometimes unrealistic extent. By contrast, images from the Pixel 7 Pro are more true to life, with accurate colors and more satisfying shadow areas that haven’t been “corrected” (read: brightened) by the camera software. .
However, it is important to keep in mind that this is largely subjective. As a photographer, imaging skills are a top priority for me in a phone. I want a camera that takes more realistic photos, with more “neutral” contrast and exposure, so I have a better image to possibly apply my own edits or effects later. So, I prefer the shots of the Pixel 7 Pro. But if photography is perhaps less of a concern and you instead want vibrant, punchy images straight from the camera that you can instantly share with family and friends, then you might appreciate the vivid look of the images from the OnePlus 11. It certainly has the edge when it comes to night mode as well.
What isn’t subjective though is the lack of a bigger zoom on the OnePlus 11. That 2x lens is fine for portraits, but that’s nothing compared to the superb 5x zoom of the Pixel 7 Pro, which is probably my favorite camera lens found on one of today’s best phones. The Pixel 7 Pro feels like putting a bag full of gear in my pocket; a superb ultra-wide, a standard super zoom and an excellent telephoto lens. With it, I know I can capture interesting compositions in almost any setting I find myself in and that’s why the OnePlus 11 doesn’t feel like a fully capable photography phone.
