iOS 17 expectations and wishlist

iOS 16 seemed to be all about customization, bringing a more personalized user experience and collaboration. Apple introduced new features like customizable lock screen which brought new widgets. They’ve also made improvements to Live Activities and iMessage, such as unsending and editing a message that’s already been sent. Freeform, the new collaboration application, has been introduced as well as a new digital whiteboard to collaborate in real time with other colleagues or students in your class. While these were great additions, there are still some features that we want to see in iOS 17 to further improve our iPhone experience. Here’s our iOS 17 wishlist!

Features still missing from iOS 16

Before we get started, there are a few features that Apple mentioned for iOS 16 that are still not available. Apple has talked about bolstering its financial features by introducing a competitor to companies like AfterPay. Allow Apple Cardholders to purchase a product once in a while and then pay in installments without interest or interest. They also talked about a new high-yield savings account that would allow customers to open a savings account with above-average interest rates. Finally, there were rumors about a music app dedicated to classical music that still hasn’t been released. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get into what we expect and want from iOS 17.

Expectations of iOS 17

There have been many rumors that iOS 17 will be a year of refinement for Apple and its iPhones. Most of the R&D and innovation money seems to go to Apple’s new VR/AR headset due out this year, which means there won’t be a major overhaul when it comes to iOS 17 updates. Instead, it should be bug fixes, experience improvements, and most importantly, battery life improvements. While there might not be a huge change from iOS 16 to iOS 17, there are still some features we should expect to see.

Additional lock screen customizations

Parker Ortolani rounding up some ideas of what Apple could do with the lock screen in iOS 17. We expect Apple to double down on lock screen customization by adding more fonts, more colors to the font, and more widget variations. We may also see an increase in the number of lock screen widgets that can be used by adding a second row. There might even be a new, larger lock screen widget that could take up an entire row. I can see Apple giving us a fitness complication with similar information to the Apple Watch fitness complication.

New home screen customizations and additions

Apple has always been extremely restrictive when it comes to customizing your actual home screen. They added widgets in iOS 14 which added a new way to view your iPhone but still didn’t fundamentally change much. Apple continues to only allow us to use their app grid – you can’t have apps floating outside of that grid, and the physics of how it works means it all starts in that top left corner.

I can see Apple loosening the reins a bit with the home screen; they might allow us to bring these new lock screen complications to the home screen itself. Adding widgets that can be interacted with, such as a to-do list or shopping list, would be easy to implement. Another addition that could come is to bring the live activities to the home screen in a carousel form. Similar to a stack of widgets, but instead it gives you an overview of the information provided by live activities.

clipboard manager

This new feature might need to be in the wishlist category, but I think Apple could give us a clipboard manager. Currently, cutting/copying/pasting on iOS is very simple. They do what they’re supposed to do, but if I need to copy a second piece of text or paste something from yesterday, it’s impossible. If Apple can find a way to copy something from my iPad Pro and paste it onto my MacBook Air, they should be able to give us a native clipboard manager!

iOS 17 Wishlist

Let’s get into the juiciest parts of what we’d like to see from iOS 17. Some of them are a bit far-fetched, but others might make sense.

Sharing personalized lock screens and home screens

iOS 15 brought the ability to customize your home screen app icons somewhat using shortcuts as a workaround. While fully customizing your app icons is a tedious process, Apple could benefit from it in two ways.

First, make it easy to change your app icon theme. Allow users or even Apple to create downloadable themes that can be easily activated without the need to use a workaround. Kevin Kal put together a great concept that allows you to have icon packs to choose from. Simply select the theme you want, then the springboard resets with the new theme installed.

Second, Apple could make it easy for you to share your creations via airdrop, iMessage, or even through a marketplace they create. This would allow customers to easily change their icons and create a new way for Apple and creators to generate additional revenue by selling themed icon packs.

Split View for iPhone

With iPhone screens getting bigger and bigger, we are now at a point where we could fit two apps on one screen. It would work with both landscape and portrait orientations. There is enough RAM, processor and screen to achieve this. I wish I could scroll through Twitter while watching something on YouTube (without PiP) or maybe have a PDF open and my notes app open to copy text or even open maps alongside a second app. There are several use cases that make sense, so having split view would be a great addition to iOS 17.

Kevin Kall Concept

New Pro mode for the Camera app

One of the last things I would appreciate would be a Pro mode built into the iPhone Camera app. More and more people are using their iPhone camera as their primary camera. Whether for videography or photography, the iPhone produces very high quality images that are good enough to be used in professional environments. Apple knows its cameras and how many people use them, so why not include a new Pro mode to allow us to be even more precise with our tool? I’d love to see that kick in, but I think Apple thinks their auto mode is good enough for 99% of users, so I can see them waiting.

More wishlist items

Be sure to watch our video on what we think iOS 17 will bring. We’re talking about a few other wishlist items, as well as some other features that we think will be surefire add-ons for iOS 17.

Conclude

Here are some of the features we’re expecting in iOS 17, along with some wishlist items. I think Apple is going to focus on optimizing the overall experience. Getting rid of bugs, improving software and increasing battery life are at the forefront of Apple’s concerns. So while we should get some new features, it wouldn’t be surprising if it was a slow and simple release for iOS 17.

What do you think? What features do you expect or hope Apple will bring to iOS 17? Will it be a big overhaul, or do you agree that it will remain relatively docile this year? Let’s discuss it in the comments!
