'Daisy Jones and The Six' review: An irresistible fable of rock 'n' roll

The disappointing truth about most celebrity gossip is that reality is rarely as wild as we imagine. And on those rare occasions, is that the case? Well, we’d be fools to think we’re ever going to hear an unbiased, unfiltered, and full account of what happened.

But wouldn’t it be great if, just once, we could?

That’s the premise of Daisy Jones and The Six, Prime Video’s long-awaited adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid. 2019 bestselling novel of the same name. Jenkins Reid was inspired by one of the most legendary celebrity dramas of the 20th century – the story of the two lead singers of Fleetwood Mac – to imagine a biopic of a fictional group in which the members are forever between love and hate.

The 10-episode miniseries is available on Amazon from March 3, and if you’ve ever watched Stevie Nicks sing Silver Springs to Lindsey Buckingham and really felt the lyrics “I know I could have loved you, but you wouldn’t let me, “It would be a huge mistake to let this show pass. But it’s not just Fleetwood Mac fans that this irresistible rock ‘n’ roll comeback is trying to impress.”

As with many popular book adaptations, there’s plenty to do on the screen version’s Daisy and The Six. To say that the Taylor Jenkins Reid fandom is emotionally invested in this story would be an understatement. In certain corners of Instagram and TikTok, you’ll find images of Daisy Jones quotes, as well as another of Jenkins Reid’s novels, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (currently in production for Netflix), underlined or highlighted with annotations in the margins.

Even before the miniseries was released, the jump to the screen gave fans more material to romance on social media platforms. Edits of footage featured in trailers are combined with voiceovers from the audiobook and songs by Taylor Swift. The Instagram appeal is further enhanced by the visual beauty of the show, which will have viewers dreaming of life in Laurel Canyon in the seventies.

From the vintage color grading, to the ever-changing costumes that seem straight out of Stevie Nicks’ wardrobe, to the rich retro detailing that runs through every scene, the lush and cohesive aesthetic of Daisy Jones and The Six. has the potential to fuel a whole change of mood. In some respects, we are on the right track. Flared pants and curtain fringe are already back, but if in the coming months the kids embrace the bohemian style and there’s yet another Fleetwood Mac resurgence, you’ll know what’s to blame.

Music is another inescapable part of the whole Daisy Jones experience. Alongside filming, the cast recorded an album, Aurora, which is set to be released the same day as the show and made available on music streaming services. Reactions to the two folk rock tracks released so far have been mixed by fans online, but while not rumored, the music written for the show (by Phoebe Bridgers, Marcus Mumford and Jackson Browne, among others) is incredibly catchy and really comes alive when the band performs it on stage.

Most important of all, it’s plausible. Without compelling, lovable music, the illusion that we’re watching a biopic about a band that was once the greatest in the world would have been shattered and the entire series would have crumbled. But you can believe people in the 70s would have fallen in love with these songs and lost their minds on a show where the chemistry between the leads was so spellbinding.

An ingenious casting means Daisy Jones, the fictional star, is played by a descendant of true rock ‘n’ roll royalty. Riley Keogh as Daisy is none other than the granddaughter of Elvis Presley, and the pedigree shines through in her performance. As has become apparent during the ongoing baby nepo debate, talent and star power aren’t always genetic, but Keogh is a magnetic singer — as much Florence Welch as Stevie Nicks.

Every time Keogh and Sam Claflin, who plays Billy Dunne, the leader of The Six, lean in to share a microphone, you don’t know if they’re about to kiss or tear each other apart.

Beyond the stage, Keogh continues to portray Daisy – the selfish, charming, headstrong woman who developed both independence and dangerous vices as the victim of prior neglectful parenting. We feel her fury when she tells a less talented love that she’s not interested in living just to be his inspiration. “I’m not the muse, okay? ” She cries. “I am someone.” And she is.

Until Daisy and Billy come face-to-face in Episode 3, the show is a bit lacking in energy. The spark between them ignites a fire not just beneath their fictional careers, but beneath this whole adaptation, sending them and their bandmates into the chaotic, creative whirlwind that propels them to stardom. From there, the tension continues to build faster throughout the season until an explosive finale that is well worth the crazy ride.

Meanwhile, Claflin is quite the arrogant and talented entertainer, struggling throughout the show with drugs, alcoholism, and how to reconcile the dizzying, unsustainable love he feels for Daisy with the love deeply rooted and enduring he has for his attractive wife Camila, played Camila Morrone.

Considering she’s the only central female character who doesn’t take the stage to perform, Morrone gives something of a performance that steals the show. Even in the emotionally heavy scenes, there’s an overpowering freshness and openness to her, so much so that you can’t help but root for her. It looks like the outstanding performance of a future star.

While the love triangle between Daisy, Billy, and Camila is seemingly at the heart of the series, dig a little deeper and the real heart of Daisy Jones and The Six appears to be the enduring relationships between the female characters. As Daisy’s pioneering disco friend Simone Jackson, Nabiyah Be brings such a blend of warmth, strength and star power to her performance that it’s a shame we don’t get to see her more. Much like Daisy, Simone feels like a “somebody”, and her story, that of pro wrestling and being gay, is worthy on its own merits.

Suki Waterhouse, as the band’s aloof British keyboardist, brings balance to both the male band and the female cast. But she has her own heartache to deal with and there are tender moments in which Waterhouse betrays her character’s underlying sweetness with a light touch. It’s to the show’s credit that it manages to pull off this rare feat of allowing each of the female characters to make very different decisions about how they want to live their lives without passing judgment on any of them. .

Some differences between the novel and the series mean that the most die-hard fans of Daisy Jones and The Six may have to put aside their pre-existing attachment to the plot to get the most out of this adaptation. These changes, however, have very little material impact on the storyline of this ambitious, big-hearted show, which has so much to offer fans of romance, music, and celebrity gossip.
