Whether you are planning a once in a lifetime experience, a epic road trip across the USA, or just a quiet weekend getaway, you’ll need the best camera to document your adventure. The right camera can elevate your photos and videos with amazing slow-motion footage in better quality, and most importantly, a sturdy waterproof seal to keep your phone safe in your pocket. You don’t have to spend a fortune on high-end cameras either. Often a GoPro can do the trick.
I travel a lot, and I’ll be the first to admit that I bring more camera gear than necessary. However, there are only a few that I use all the time, and those are the ones I recommend here. One of them will probably be all you need for your next road trip.

You can’t go wrong with a GoPro. They have excellent image quality, are quite robust, and their application is solid enough to allow you to edit your photos and footage to look their best. The main reason I recommend the Hero 10 over one of the cheaper options is because of the Max Lens Mod. This lens swaps out and records an even wider angle of view. In addition, it improves the already excellent stabilization.
I use it not only to capture panoramic views but also as a dash cam as you can see in the video below.
Most recent GoPro Hero 11 has a few upgrades, but for most people the Hero 10 will look pretty much the same and save you some cash.

Insta360
I’ve been using 360 cameras for years. They have come a long way. This is the first one I would consider using without a backup action camera. 360 cameras capture everything in a sphere around the camera. Later, with the app, you can choose what you want to show and how. So basically you’re recording everything and then cropping to show only the interesting parts.
One of the coolest tricks a 360 camera can do is automatically pull out the selfie stick, so it looks like you have a drone following you. To learn more, see:

This is a unique and tiny action camera that I use a lot. It’s not really a primary camera, but definitely a great secondary camera. It’s about the size of your thumb – and magnetic. You can hang it from your shirt while wearing an included magnetic pendant, or attach it to anything metal, or use one of countless smart mounts. The box that charges and controls the camera even has a built-in tripod. Footage is wonderfully stabilized and looks much better than you’d expect for something so small.

For most people, the GoPro Hero 10 Black is the only action camera they’ll ever need. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, the new Hero 11 improves on the 10 in a few minor ways. For one, there’s a new image sensor. The main difference is that it is more square. So if you often post vertical content to, say, TikTok or Instagram, but still want to be able to post standard horizontal content to YouTube, this makes it easier for you to do both without a significant loss in quality.

DJI
If you don’t want to invest in a new camera, or don’t want the (just) basics, consider a gimbal. You can really improve the quality of your videos with a gimbal. They smooth out your hand movements as you walk around and can do smooth, professional-looking pans and tilts. They are essential if you mainly use your phone. I have the OM 3, but the 5 is the current model and is easier to connect to your phone.

If you record a lot of videos, your camera and phone memory will fill up quickly. Cloud storage is an option, but if you’re bringing a laptop, consider a small portable hard drive. I have one and they seem incredibly small for how much they can store. They are also reasonably sturdy.

Selfie stick
I don’t have a strong recommendation for this one, other than to say that the selfie sticks are awesome (when you’re not in a crowd, that is) and you should find one you like. Even I, who have what one friend describes as “incredibly long arms,” find great use in a selfie stick. They allow me to capture photos and videos that would otherwise be impossible, especially with a 360 camera that automatically removes the stick from the final image or video.

I recommend buying one with tripod mount screws on both ends, which gives you more options on what you can mount and how you can mount the stick itself. Likewise, make sure you get one that can hold all your cameras and phones.
Remote camera
I find them super convenient, although depending on how you record that might not be the case. It’s a simple Bluetooth remote that lets you control starting and stopping camera recording, as well as changing modes, settings, and more. Granted, you can use the camera app on your phone instead, but I feel like I spend half my life trying to connect cameras to their apps, so Sometimes a remote control is easier. Sometimes the remote does not connect either. It’s a problem anyway. Too bad.

Tripods and other supports
One last thing. Tripods and mounts. You probably don’t need a full size tripod, few people do. A small, foldable model can be very handy though, allowing you to mount the camera to just about anything and get a great shot with you. I’ve had good luck with Joby GorillaPods. I have an old version of this one.
Also discover the suction cup and dashboard mounts. I have a small dashboard and a small windshield so it was much harder to find something that worked. So what I’m using probably won’t work for you. As a general rule, I recommend mounting the camera as high as possible, if you can, for the best view.
I will end with my favorite, an antenna support. Unscrew your antenna and install this bracket. When paired with a 360 camera, it allows you to get an exciting and unique view of your adventure. I’ve had one of those and place a selfie stick on it, along with a 360 camera, to get the drone-like footage of me and my car in grand teton national park. However, how well this works will depend on your particular vehicle.
