'Star Trek: Picard' lacks substance beyond callbacks and continuity porn

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard, Season 3, Episode 1: “The Next Generation.”

In the 25th century…

There’s a wounded spaceship playing opossum in the beautiful and unforgiving vastness of space, and inside is a museum. The captain’s quarters contain a treasure trove of props from that old TV show you watched as a kid, maybe you still do as an adult. There is a hyponebulizationa ready room terminal broadcasting the logs of “The Best of Both Worlds: Part One” and the deceased husband of the captain personal effects. When an intruder alert sounds, the sleepy captain springs into action, brandishing a phaser rifle, and sets to defending his territory. In a chiaroscuro hallway, she goes all-out in Rambo against two death’s-head villains, and wins, but takes a punch in the stomach for her trouble. As she desperately tries to escape, she makes one last desperate plea for help – to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard.

Picard, of course, is in his own museum: he and the new beau Laris look at his Ready Room painting from the Enterprise D. At his desk is his Ready Room chair from the Enterprise E, and in front of him is a Ressikan Flute and one Kurlan Naiskos. Later, his combadge of the D will begin to chirp, and Picard will rummage through boxes of iso-linear chips and old uniforms to find him. Less than ten minutes later, you can already imagine the Reddit threads and website posts listing every Easter egg lurking in the half-focus. “Why would someone send a coded message to a twenty-plus-year-old Enterprise D communicator?” asks Picard. It’s a good question to ask given that it all makes absolutely no sense in the internal logic of the show.

With a distress message from her former boyfriend, Picard springs into action by talking to Laris. To be fair, Picard has never been a kinetic doer, and he has to check out his new partner’s feelings before he runs off to save his old one. Once he does that, he gets in on the action by heading to Ten Forward for a sit down drink with Riker.

The scene transition has Picard looking at the Enterprise D painting before fading into an Eaglemoss model of the D on the bar shelf. If there was one thing this show needed, it was more beauty shots of beautifully presented memorabilia on shelves. Although there is a glimmer of self-deprecation, with the waiter stating that “nobody wants the fat ones”. When a sinister figure ends up following Picard and Riker out of the bar, they drop the same Enterprise D model into a glass for one last close-up.

After a detour via Raffi, undercover on M’Talas Prime (very subtle, Sponge), the fanservice goes further. First, we’ll do some nods to 80s Trek movies, paying the Khan’s Wrath-Title card “In the 25th century…”. Riker and Picard joke on their way to Spacedock, hatching a plan to hijack the Titan to mount a rescue mission right under the nose of its new captain, Shaw. But the Titan has been so completely revamped from the Luna class that it gets an A on its registry as a “Neo Constitution class.” I admit it – it managed to bypass my nostalgic glands, since I’m a sucker for Andrew Probert and Richard Taylor’s spaceship design and jerry goldsmith Movie score. And when he exits the Spacedock before jumping to warp, à la THE Search Spockwe even get some of James Horner’s beloved French horns added to the mix.

Then again like Khan’s WrathPicard and Riker are channeled on board with Seven’s old square electronic whistles. Shaw is, alas, not up for filming, and in addition to insisting that Seven use her human name (in a way that clearly makes her uncomfortable), he begins to goad Picard and Riker. The latter for his taste for jazz, the former for his past as a Borg, like The needling of Sisko Picard during their first meeting.

About 650 words and I didn’t really talk about the plot, because not much happened. After 40 minutes, Picard received a distress call and told a lot of people about it, and that was about it. There were plenty of callbacks and continuity pornography, paraphilic depictions of old props, but very little forward movement in the narrative. Picard and Riker travel to Beverley’s ship to find her in a stasis pod, with her supervising son. They are attacked and left stranded with no hope of escape while a large pointed ship with a Romulan design threatens outside.

Now remind me. A successful Starfleet admiral receives a distress call from an old flame, a doctor no less, who is threatened by unknown things. When he comes to her aid, he first encounters her adult son who instantly fights with the good guys before they realize who he is and what he stands for. All the while, our heroes are threatened by a much more powerful ship looming long in the background. Have we seen this in Star Trek before?
