In a few hours, Sony will let all Gran Turismo players face off against GT Sophy, the AI opponent who has defeated the world’s best car racing video game players.
A test period of what Sony calls the GT Sophy Race Together mode begins at 10 p.m. PT Monday (1 a.m. ET Tuesday) with a free update to Gran Turismo 7, the most recent version of the venerable PlayStation game. It will let you race a quartet of GT Sophy AI opponents on four of GT7’s dozen courses until the end of March.
In short, Sony is improving its computer opponent, a move that should give human gamers a much better and more challenging game, says Peter Würman, director of Sony AI America and head of the GT Sophy project. The four tracks cover a range of difficulty levels and you can play head-to-head against GT Sophy in identical cars for the greatest challenge.
“We hope this gives them a much more realistic driving racing experience so they have competitors that feel more human at all skill levels,” Wurman said. GT7’s standard computer opponent goes beyond mid-level skills, but GT Sophy takes it a step further without requiring players to enter the “Wild West” of online gaming to find good human opponents, he said.
Even though it’s only a month-long test, it’s a big deal in the gaming world – and maybe beyond. Sony hopes to eventually add AI opponents not just to Gran Turismo but to other video games. Reinforcement learning, like most AI techniques today, uses a foundation called a neural network inspired by the human brain. A training phase “teaches” the neural network to recognize patterns, then an inference phase uses that network to make decisions, such as how fast a car should turn around a bend.

Sony trained its GT Sophy by pitting its AI against 20 PlayStations running around the clock, Wurman said. The bots controlled acceleration, braking and steering, just like a human player. Instead of using the handheld controller or steering wheel accessory that human racers hold, the bots used a computer interface that fed control data into the GT7 game 10 times per second.
Reinforcement learning then handed out rewards to a bot for doing the right thing, such as completing a lap or passing an opponent, Wurman said. Punishments discourage other actions like running into walls or colliding with other cars.
This reinforcement learning technique is what allowed Google subsidiary DeepMind to win all 57 classic Atari video games and then later outplay humans in the more difficult real-time strategy game StarCraft II. .
Not just academic
DeepMind researchers, who have also built AIs that beat humans at the game of Go and tackled the notoriously difficult computer problem of predicting how chains of molecules fold into different proteins, have produced some impressive academic research. But GT Sophy technology has not only claimed a prestigious place on the cover of the scientific journal Nature in 2022, but to appear in your living room game console.

But there is still a higher level: the unwritten rules of racing. “It’s a very loosely defined thing, but you’ll be punished if you don’t follow etiquette,” Spanger said. Human gamers would be irritated if GT Sophy violated the standards that evolved in the real world and simply avoided playing against GT Sophy.
After just one day of training, GT Sophy bots were better than 95% of human players. With 10 or 12 more days of training, the robots could beat the best human GT7 players.

GT Sophy will only last a few weeks this round, but expect the AI opponent to return at some point.
“It gives us a chance to let hundreds of thousands of players experience it and get feedback and figure out how to revise it for next time,” Wurman said. “We obviously have an interest in releasing this permanently in-game.”
