I vaguely remember the first time I watched Prospect. I had scrolled through a list of indie sci-fi movies, forced my boyfriend to watch maybe seven trailers, then waited for him to finally settle on this 2018 gem. We watched it . We liked it. Jay Duplass was charming as always, and I was delightfully surprised when Pedro Pascal showed up in a burnt orange spacesuit. Overall, I have fond memories of this film. I even remember wondering why it wasn’t super famous.
So… I rewatched Prospect on Hulu.
My god, I knew it was good. But I forgot how absolutely amazing this movie is.
First of all, if you’re like me and love when movies are visually and aurally pleasing, this is the one for you. About 10 seconds later, you’re already inside some kind of dilapidated, but obviously functional, spaceship. The color grading has a vintage aesthetic. a pep, 60s niche pop song croons in the background to represent what one of the craft’s inhabitants, played by Sophie Thatcher of the Yellowjackets, is listening to on her chunky, watery headphones.
Her father, played by Duplass, is nearby. His piquant wit contrasts with a rather childish and laid-back demeanor. Yet he seems clearly stressed, constantly chewing what you soon learn is a stimulant drug, despite his daughter’s passive disapproval.
Through a window, you see a turquoise orb covered in lace-like clouds. Seems awfully realistic considering the movie conservative budget.
Basically, these two are on a mission to land on that alien moon, slice into a bunch of disgusting slimy eggs, and harvest the rare alien gems stuck inside that are worth a fortune. Upon landing, they run into Pascal’s character, who throws a wrench into the plane. I won’t say much more because a lot of weird, unexpected and twisty things start happening from that point on, and it’s probably best to go unprimed.
However, I will point out Why the father-daughter duo embarked on this difficult mission. It’s basically because they have large loans to repay.
I bring up this detail because it is crucial to what makes Prospect’s setting particularly intriguing.
Prospect doesn’t portray the classic elite space travel situation you often encounter in sci-fi dramas. There are no sterile white walls, no ultra-expensive AI robots and no green CGI aliens. No. In this futuristic dystopia, going to different planets and moons is commercialized so cheaply that even people struggling to make ends meet can do so.
The spaceship of the two main characters is assembled with spare parts and makes alarming noises during its descent. Their mismatched spacesuits look like they came from a thrift store. And yes, there is a “good filter”, as Duplass’ character calls one of the two breathing apparatuses he has. It probably uses a less good filter to save costs.
Also, while the surface of the moon visited by the team doesn’t look all that different from a beautiful forest on Earth – likely due to budget constraints – that doesn’t detract from the story in any way. In fact, Prospect was originally made as a short with a budget of just $21,000 (and a different cast). Then it’s gone viral on Vimeo. So directors Chris Caldwell and Zeek Earl pitched it to studios as a feature, got a few million, and gave us the masterpiece we have now. And I’m so glad they did.
Beyond its unique story, Prospect’s environment is intentional and refreshing, every second. It almost reminds me of a walking simulation video game sometimes, like Gone homewhere the world is so meticulously constructed that every corner has something special to admire.
