Apple released the M2 Mac Mini over two weeks ago, and I’ve been using it as my primary home computer ever since. If you want to skip the post and know what I think, my general consensus is that this is the ultimate bang for your buck in the market right now. Pure horsepower per dollar, if that’s even a metric, has to be the best we’ve seen in years. Let me break down my experience for you and help you make a buying decision on this mini beast.
Baseline M2 Mac mini – What you get for $599
For this review, I used the base model of the M2 Mac mini. I wanted to see if this $599 computer could handle day-to-day tasks as well as some more intensive tasks like video editing, handling large Excel files, gaming, and everything in between. Usually, when a company sells their entry-level computer so low, it means they want you to upgrade to the next computer. But it looks like this M2 Mac mini will be able to handle most, if not all, of the tasks you throw at it.

This obviously means that you will need to have or purchase your own peripherals like a mouse, keyboard, and some sort of monitor solution. Here are some recommendations that I have used or currently use.
Why I use the M2 Mac mini
The M2 Mac mini really surprised me in terms of how much I can expand what it can do. In this section, I wanted to break down three different use cases for the Mac mini. We’ll cover the less intensive/everyday tasks, the medium-intensity tasks, and finally the tasks that really pushed what this entry-level computer can do.
Everyday and Less Intensive Use Cases
If you just need a computer that can perform basic tasks, that’s a no-brainer. I like to have multiple tabs and windows open at all times. A typical use case for me is having 10 or more Chrome tabs open, a few Safari windows open, Slack running, a Twitter timeline running, and a podcast video playing from YouTube. If it’s a situation similar to your daily use, the basic M2 Mac mini can easily handle it and deal with it effectively. The Mac mini stays quiet and cool to the touch with these types of tasks.
Another aspect of the M2 chip is how fast it renders your user experience. You can see in our video review how fast apps open. I open 20 apps simultaneously and the M2 chip opens everything instantly, even with the 8GB of RAM. So again, if this is to be used for surfing the web, watching YouTube videos, listening to music, chatting on iMessage or Slack, then you will be extremely happy.
Mid-Level Task and Uses
Now here’s where we come into conversations like, can I use this for work? The short answer is absolutely. I like to think I have a good understanding of using these computers for the classic YouTuber creative task, but also using the Mac mini for productivity and more professional work.
Let’s talk about productivity and business-related work first. When it comes to running productivity applications such as the Microsoft suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word), the Mac mini performs brilliantly. Files open immediately, are fast, and integrate easily with your workflow and other applications. I had no problem opening Powerpoint files over 100MB or using an Excel file with 10,000 rows of data. Everything is very responsive, quick to use, and easy to save and share. So if you need your Mac to run Windows apps efficiently, even this basic model can handle it. If you are a user of web applications like Google Suite, it will work even better because everything is web-based.
Running coding apps like Termius and being able to code in real time and manipulate Ubuntu-based platforms was no sweat for the Mac mini either.
Then we have the video editing part and the photo editing part. Surprise, surprise, the Mac mini can also handle these tasks without issue. I used iMovie to edit a 12 minute YouTube video that used 4k 60FPS footage, with five layers of video and three layers of audio. I also stabilized images, added filters and added text. The video was rendered in real time, there was no lag or spinning wheel of death. You can look my review two weeks later and see how fast the M2 Mac mini was able to export the video. So if you have a small business that requires light social media content creation and editing, the Mac mini will be more than enough to handle that workload.
High-end intensive tasks
Now keep in mind that I’m using the basic M2 Mac mini, I’m sure if you add RAM or go for the M2 Pro version it will work with the following use cases. When using an Excel file with over 250,000 rows of data, the computer slowed down as I quickly browsed through the data and as I typed. So if you’re an expert Excel user dealing with these files, you might need a little more. Another situation that caused the Mac mini to hiccup was with 8k images. I tried using an 8k video file on iMovie and it was unable to cycle through the timeline without getting lag.
But outside of those two use cases, the Mac mini performed just fine. I was even able to play on the M2 Mac mini while using my Xbox controller!
Who is the M2 Mac mini for?
I stand by what I said earlier, the M2 Mac mini is the everyday user’s computer. At $599, or $499 through the Education Store, name another computer that can cover as many use cases as this one.
