The report cites a “source familiar with the matter” and says Google pays Apple a “portion of search revenue generated by people using Google Chrome on iOS.” It’s unclear how much Google pays Apple under this deal.
The register says this revenue-sharing deal is part of what is being investigated by the Competition and Markets Authority in the UK. As part of its evidence, the report points to some curious redactions in the 365-page report released by the CMA last year (emphasis ours):
“Google pays Apple a share of the search revenue it derives from browser traffic on iOS in the following contexts: In exchange for being the default search provider on Safari, Google pays Apple a share of the revenue from the Safari search traffic; and pursuant to various trade agreements, Google pays Apple a share of the revenue derived from search traffic (X).
“Under these agreements, Apple receives a significant portion of Google’s search traffic revenue from Safari and (X) on iOS devices.
“Given this revenue share, when (X) or Safari succeeds competing for an iOS user, rather than earning a full share of search traffic revenue, they only earn a partial share (i.e. revenue they were not previously entitled to). These revenue-sharing agreements therefore dampen the incentives for competition between browsers on iOS.
The report also points to a December 2021 antitrust complaint filed in California and updated March 2022. The report alleges that “Google paid Apple billions of dollars and agreed to share its profits with Apple to eliminate the threat and fear of Apple as a competitor.”
