Although Apple Silicon currently only works with its own integrated GPU cores, Apple is looking to support more options, such as PCI-E GPUs, which all work in tandem.
One thing the Intel Macs had that the Apple Silicon Macs didn’t was the ability to use GPUs in external enclosures via Thunderbolt, or internally in a Mac Pro. There is simply no arrangement with Apple Silicon to do so, at present.
This may not be an issue that concerns most Mac users. This is a big deal for some, and especially for Mac Pro buyers.
Now, however, a set of four recently revealed patent applications seem to show that Apple is at least considering this problem.
Why Apple dropped support for multiple GPUs
Apple Silicon has made dramatic, virtually unprecedented improvements in performance and capabilities over previous Intel processors. Part of the reason is how new Apple-designed processors have reduced previous bottlenecks.
For example, unlike typical device RAM chips, the new unified memory system saw RAM installed on the central processor. That means you can’t upgrade it later, but it also drastically sped up the speed at which this processor could use RAM.
Apple Silicon processors ship with integrated graphics cores for similar reasons. And to support third parties, Apple would have to find a way to achieve several things.
- Physically include space for GPU cards or connectors for external GPUs
- Determine when a task is best served by another GPU
- Then root the data on this GPU
- Manage how it fetches data from the GPU
The first point may be addressed in the next Mac Pro, or perhaps a later model, as this machine should be expandable.
Everything else on the list is covered by one or more of the four newly revealed patent applications.
The Benefits of Multiple GPU Support
“Given their increasing computing capabilities, graphics processing units (GPUs) are now widely used for large-scale workloads,” Apple says in the patent application“Logical to hardware slot mapping for GPUs.”
“APIs such as Metal and OpenCI provide software developers with an interface to access GPU computing power for their applications,” he continues. “In recent times, software developers have shifted substantial parts of their applications to GPU usage.”
Apple uses the term “kick” to refer to the type of discrete unit of graphics work that a GPU can perform. He then says there is a problem getting those kicks on the right GPUs.
“Data master circuitry (e.g. a compute data master, vertex data master, and pixel data master) can distribute the work of these kicks to multiple replicated shader cores,” says -il, “for example, on a communication structure”.
A graphics card can occupy what Apple calls a “kickslot” which appears to be little more than a PCI-E slot internal or external to the computer. There could be two or more, with macOS switching between them.
Switch between GPUs
Switching between these graphics cards requires technology similar to NVidia’s old Scalable Link Interface (SLI), which controlled cards and kick sets.
Apple’s new patent applications include a called “Kickslot Manager Circuitry For Graphics Processors”, which is part of getting the same result.
“The slot manager circuits can store, using an input from the tracking slot circuit, software-specified information for a set of graphics jobs,” Apple explains. “The slot manager circuit may pre-fetch, from location and prior to allocating shader base resources for the graphics work set, configuration register data for the graphics work set.”

So two or more GPU cards can work together, but it requires some planning. So Apple’s third new patent application, “Affinity-Based Graphics Scheduling”.
“Distribution circuits may receive a software-specified graphics work set,” Apple explains in this application, “and a software-specified mapping of parts of the graphics work set to groups of GPU subunits” .
“This can improve cache efficiency, in some embodiments,” Apple notes, “by allowing graphics jobs that access the same memory areas to be assigned to the same group of subunits that share a cache.”
Get data from a GPU
Thus, Apple’s patent applications cover physically supporting two or more graphics cards and then determining which is best for a particular task. The patent applications then describe how the work can be distributed among the available GPUs.
This lets retrieve data from the GPU, and this comes from the more general patent application called“Software control techniques for graphics hardware supporting logical slots”.
This patent application includes descriptions of how “control circuits can determine mappings between logical slots and distributed hardware slots for different sets of graphics jobs”.
“Various aspects of mapping can be controlled by software,” he says. “For example, software may specify one or more of the following: priority information for a set of graphical jobs, to retain mapping after job completion, a dispatch rule, a target group of subunits, a subunit mask, a scheduling policy, to retrieve hardware locations from another logical location, etc.”

It seems that every issue raised by the desire to use multiple graphics cards has at least been investigated by Apple.
So that leaves the obvious question of whether Apple will make a Mac that adds support for multiple GPUs to Apple Silicon – and when.
