Is Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” about Liam Hemsworth? The song directly references moments from their marriage and serves as a self-empowerment anthem.

Cyrus and Hemsworth were married in 2018 and announced their split less than a year later, in 2019. The couple has definitely had their ups and downs – including a rather disastrous experience in late 2018 when wildfires in California destroyed their Malibu home. Cyrus told Howard Stern that she and the 30-year-old Hunger Games star “lost everything”. Miley references the disaster in the first verse “We were right until we weren’t / We built a house and watched it burn.” In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2020, she revealed that the fire “did what I couldn’t do alone”. “It took me away from what no longer served its purpose,” she told the magazine. “And then when you drown, you reach for that lifeguard and you want to save yourself. I think that’s really what getting married was ultimately about for me. One last attempt to save me.

She continued to talk about her relationship with Hemsworth with Howard Stern in December 2020. “Me being an intense person and not wanting to sit through it and not wanting to go, you know, ‘What could be purposeful about that?’ I just held on to what was left of that house, which was me and him,” she told Stern. “And I really love him and I loved him very, very, very much and I still do, I always will.”

Cyrus and Hemsworth had been in an on-and-off relationship since 2009, when they met on the set of the last song. In an interview with Howard Stern, Miley also revealed that she didn’t think she and Hemsworth would get married. “We were together since we were 16,” she said. “Our house caught fire. We were engaged – I don’t know if we really thought we were going to get married, but when we lost our house in Malibu – if you listen to my voice before and after the fire, they’re very different, so that trauma really affected my voice. I was actually in South Africa so I couldn’t go home and, like, my animals were tied to a pole on the beach. I lost everything.”

The song’s chorus interpolates lyrics from “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. However, instead of pining for love or getting back together with an ex, Miley explores the topic of self-love and does it all herself. “I can buy myself flowers/Write my name in the sand/Talk to myself for hours/Yeah, some things you don’t understand,” she sings on the track. “But I can take myself dancing, yes / I can hold my own hand / Yes, I can love myself better than you.” The music video also reflects this self-love as the singer is seen parading through the streets and hills of Los Angeles.

Miley Cyrus “Flowers” lyrics

[Verse 1]
We were good, we were gold
Half a dream that cannot be sold
We were right until we weren’t
Built a house and watched it burn

[Pre-Chorus]
Mmm, I didn’t want to leave you, I didn’t want to lie
I started to cry, but then I remembered that I

[Chorus]
I can buy flowers for myself
Write my name in the sand
talk to yourself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yes I can love myself better than you

[Post-Chorus]
Can you love me better, I can love myself better baby
Can you love me better, I can love myself better baby

Paint my nails cherry red
Match the roses you left
No remorse, no regrets
I forgive every word you said

I started to cry, but then I remembered that I
