It’s a wildly successful morning as far as the Producers Guild of America is concerned, as it unveiled the film and TV nominations on Thursday for its 34th annual PGA Awards.
profitable streaks Avatar: The Way of Water; Top Gun: Maverick and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever along with commercial successes Elvis, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Everything everywhere at once all competed for nominations for the guild’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Theatrical Film Producer. Joining them on the list are Steven Spielberg The Fabelmans, Inisherin’s Banshees, Tanr and The whale.

With theatrical box office returns slowly recovering, and in some cases matching or surpassing pre-pandemic levels, the PGA is making a statement with a strong showing of blockbuster films, including no fewer than four sequels – which could be a record number for the organization’s film awards. . The PGA has always shown favoritism to films that score at the box office as opposed to critics’ groups, for example, and the big studio’s presence is particularly strong this year with Walt Disney Co accounting for Marvel’s Black Panther sequel, the long-awaited film of the 20th century avatar follow-up and spotlights banshees; universal with fabelmans and focus features’ Tanr; paramount represented by The Top Gun sequel 36 years in the making; and Warner’s Elvis.
‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’
This stellar showing for the studios didn’t leave much room for the indies, but the A24 scored much as expected with the out-of-the-box feel. Everything everywhere at once, and also perhaps the most surprising candidate of the bunch The whale, an intimate drama discussed primarily by SAG Award-nominated, Oscar-praised performance by Brendan Fraser as a 600-pound man desperately trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter. Netflix made the list with just Rian Johnson’s follow-up to its box office juggernaut knives out, which over the Thanksgiving break had a full unorthodox performance week of “previews” on all three major streaming chains where it did very well, and is now climbing the charts of top movies to watch on the streamer since it began airing on Netflix just before Christmas.
Netflix also has a favorite among the PGA Animated Feature nominees with Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro. Also nominated are Pixar/Disney’s Turning Red; DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots: The Last Wish; A24, again playing in the big guys’ sandbox with Marcel the shell with shoes; and according to the PGA’s Love Affair with Money, Universal/Illumination’s Biggest Animated Blockbuster of 2022 Minions: The Rise of Gruwhich received its first mention in major awards here.

Not making the PGA Top 10 Films list is Babylon, Triangle of Sorrow, and foreign language titles All Quiet on the Western Front, and from india RRR — the last two have big Best Picture Oscar discussions, but the PGA rarely nominates foreign-language films. Also missing are all of the female-directed films from 2022, including the acclaimed Women Talking, The Woman King, Up and She said, an unfortunate pattern set on Wednesday with the DGA’s announcement.
The PGA has a strong track record in matching the Academy Awards, as they both have 10 Best Picture nominees. Last year, the PGA matched eight out of 10 with the Academy Awards (for which they also rate eligible producers), and both groups agreed on the Best Picture winner, CODE In the previous year, they also combined with nomadic landand for 2018 with Green Book. For 2019, however, the PGA chose 1917, while the Academy went with Parasite.
