It came after Eddie, while accepting a Golden Globe on Tuesday, joked that a key to success was ‘keeping Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your mouth!’

Eddie made the joke when he was presented with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award celebrating ‘outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment’.

He ended his speech with a message to ‘all new dreamers and up-and-coming artists in the room tonight’.

Jada appeared opposite Eddie in the hit 1996 comedy The Nutty Professor, a remake of a 1960s Jerry Lewis vehicle.

Later, Eddie was quick to remind the audience that the joke was to be taken lightly.

When asked if he had spoken to Smith or Rock since making the joke, the 61-year-old comedy icon said: ‘No, I haven’t. But I love them both.

Murphy added to Entertainment Tonight: ‘Yes, because I actually worked with Jada. I love Will. I love Will and I love Chris – and it’s all love.’

The actor then said he doesn’t believe he’ll hear from Smith after making the comment and told Extra he would have made the same joke if he was hosting this year’s Oscars.

“I would have worked on that joke I made right then and there,” he told Extra.

Explaining why he told the joke, Murphy revealed: ‘You have to say something about it, then move on.’
