Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have been one of Hollywood’s “it” couples for years, in part because of how unremarkable they look despite their impossibly glamorous lives.
Rather than cultivating the usual celebrity aloofness, the pair’s self-deprecating jokes and constant Instagram pranks have become something of a pop culture institution.
And each new iteration is always greeted with a resounding chorus of fans declaring their marriage “relationship goals.”
But his gimmick has started to wear a bit thin for some fans, who are starting to feel the whole thing is an act — and one that has long since exhausted its welcome.
In a recent thread on the “r/popculturechat” subReddit, a fan bluntly asked, “Why do people love Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively?”
And the responses show that many pop culture vultures have had enough of Hollywood’s craziest couple.
Fans started expressing their negative feelings about Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.
Many fans aren’t buying Reynolds and Lively’s “perfect” marriage and think it’s all just another Hollywood PR stunt.
It’s easy to forget in the face of celebrities’ carefully crafted public personas that they are, after all, billionaire celebrities whose lives bear no resemblance to that of a normal person.
In the case of Reynolds and Lively, many people feel that they are taking the “normal” thing a little too far.
One Redditor called the pair “manufactured”, while another called their “so quirky lol persona” a calculated move created by their PR team.
One TikTok user had a similar opinion, arguing that the constant jabs at each other are just a modern iteration of “ball and chain” culture.
Another Reddit commenter said that the more the couple “tries to push the perfect marriage/relationship goals narrative online, the less I believe in them.”
Fans have had enough of Reynolds and Lively’s constant trolling.
Reynolds and Lively’s constant social media trolling has become an institution among fans.
Fans seem to especially love Reynolds’ annual roast at Lively on his birthday, like the one below in 2019 where he posted a series of unflattering photos of his wife.
But for some fans, the act got too old, too fast. One Redditor called Reynolds’ entire style “very strange to me”, while another pointed out that his jokes are all the same, including in his movies.
The user wrote: “His humor gets pretty stale when you realize he jokes the same way all the time.”
“He says something funny with a very straight face, and then looks at the person he says it to.”
Another wrote that while they like Lively, they “can’t stand him” and are particularly irritated by Reynolds’ trolling of his wife, which they wrote, “looks like it puts effort into it”.
One Redditor wholeheartedly agreed, calling Lively trolls Reynolds, like a 2017 birthday post in which he cropped Lively out of a photo entirely, “too old.”
And then they made a very unfavorable comparison to Reynolds’ comedic styles – “It’s kind of weird to me as a kind of boomer humor”.
There. Tough but fair.
Still, for every person who seems to hate Reynolds and Lively, there’s another who loves them and doesn’t “understand intense hate,” as one Redditor put it.
In the end, Reynolds and Lively’s social media portrayal of a perfect and hilarious celebrity marriage isn’t hurting anyone.
But after years and years of public performances, it’s hard not to notice a little bit.
