NBA DFS Building Blocks Today: Friday, December 16

Special thanks to Matthew Belman, who covered this series of articles while I was on vacation. Tonight, we have a packed roster with 20 teams taking the court and a plethora of injury news. Let’s get in on the fun!

Key Play of the Day — Nikola Jokic: Denver Nuggets-Los Angeles Lakers

  • Stokastic Preliminary Points Projections: DraftKings: 59.55 | Fan Duel: 57.15
  • Stokastic Preliminary Projections: DraftKings: 3.9% | Fan Duel: 1.4%
  • DFS Salary: DraftKings: $11,900 | Fan Duel: $12,200

Normally, we wouldn’t want to burn our center slot on such a large slate with such a large player pool, but it looks like two of our three superstar picks will be in this position. Despite leading the league with 33.0 points per game and having the second-highest usage rate at 37.9%, NBA MVP favorite Luka Doncic does not top the fantasy list. Yes, he is a great piece and by no means should we avoid him; however, if you create an escalation, Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid are better fantasy options.

It’s no secret that the Mavericks play at a snail’s pace. That said, it might surprise some players to learn that over the past 15 games, Portland is also recording a bottom six pace, with 98.2 possessions per 48 minutes. Yes, both teams suck on defense, but so do the Lakers and Nuggets, and their game boasts a projected total of 15 points higher than the Trail Blazers going into their Dallas matchup.

While shorthanded warriors simply won’t be able to take on Embiid, the same can be said for Los Angeles against Jokic. Over the past 10 games, the Lakers are allowing 116.7 points per 100 possessions, which is fifth worst defensive efficiency this stretch, and have also been below average in the cup.

Although Jokic helped this season with a Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon, Michael Porter Jr., it’s still on the shelf, and the two-time NBA MVP is averaging a fantasy 1.7 points per minute, second only to his phenomenal 1.8 rate last year.

Also, rolling with Jokic and another player from this match will give us more flexibility to react to any news that comes after the main roster closes. This game appears to be set up like a track meet, meaning don’t get too comfortable with your “currently winning” values during the first three hours of the night.

Additional NBA DFS Building Block Picks Today – Sports Betting Opportunities

Tonight PJ Tucker has a 3.5 over/under line on his rebound for the Warriors game. NBA player Stokastic’s projections put him at 5.2 rebounds and a 65% probability that he will exceed that threshold.

Tucker has surpassed that milestone in five of his last seven games and is averaging 4.3 rebounds per game. The 37-year-old managed to stay one step ahead of Father Time and is averaging 5.3 rebounds per 36 minutes, which is in line with his rates over the last five seasons.

This bet has a semi-heavy juice of -140, which comes with a constant 11% expected return on investment (xROI) per OddsShopper. These types of bets with a high probability of success but a lower payout are best used as a leg in a straight or parlay in the same game.

Atlanta Hawks-Charlotte Hornets

Atlanta’s rotation is looking pretty thin tonight as they prepare to take on the Hornets in Queen City. Dejounte Murray, John Collins and clint chapel are all marginalized with various illnesses, which is opening the door to De’Andre Hunter and Onyeka Okongwu in the frontcourt, while imposing additional offensive responsibilities on Trae Young.

Bogdan Bogdanovic was brought in slowly, but he has logged 31, 36 and 34 minutes off the bench in the last three games. With 40 or more Fantasy Points in two of three games during this period, don’t worry about him coming off the bench. jalen johnson and AJ Griffin are decent value options, although they will likely fall out of favor as additional news comes out.

LaMelo ball came back after missing nearly a month, and in 34 minutes on Wednesday, he had 23 points and 11 assists on his way to a fantasy 40-point plateau. This is a good combination for him and his defense teammate. Terry Rozier, with Dennis Smith Jr. on the shelf. PJ Washington, Mason Plumlee and Kelly Oubre Jr. are tertiary options, although they have merit as part of a minigame stack.

Sacramento Kings-Detroit Pistons

This Motor City clash has an implied total of 237.5 points, which could become very intriguing for both sides if Kevin Huerter is out of Sacramento and if Detroit continues to play random “injury” designations while the tankathon is going on.

De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis are key options across all formats tonight, and if Huerter is out, the veteran Monk Malik, noob Keegan Murray and elder statesman Harrison Barnes everyone would see an increase in their fantasy opportunities.

The Pistons continue to be led by Bojan Bogdanovic on the offensive, with Alec BurksKillian Hayes and newbie Jaden Ivey everyone having their moments. we also won Marvin Bagley III into a “Remember me?!” game, which bodes well for their sometimes unfocused efforts. If everyone is healthy for Detroit, then they lose some of their luster, but it’s hard to believe we won’t see them give a player or two the night off for some random reason.

Minnesota Timberwolves-Oklahoma City Thunder

There is news pending for the Timberwolves with Rudy Gobert (ankle) and D’Angelo Russell (knee) both decisions in game time. If they’re in the starting lineup, fire them on all formats as this game has a total of 223.0 implied points and they should continue to produce with Karl-Anthony Cities off season. If Gobert is out then Naz Reid it’s a tremendous dandy discount in the central position. He also has standalone value on the night’s secondary list. If Russell is out then Jaylen Nowell is the direct beneficiary and there will be slow offensive opportunities to Antonio Eduardo. Kyle Anderson benefits from any Minnesota player’s lack of time, with his chameleon abilities to fill in wherever the team needs.

Thunder has been putting out a solid product at home, so Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and josh giddey are marginal central plays. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Kenrich Williams are out, which should give security Darius Bazley, Luguentz Dort and newbie jalen williams for rotational minutes in the upper 20s.
