A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

6/10: Too high, you say, for sunny but cold 40s? You just wait for what’s to come.

  • Today: Mostly sunny and cool, light winds. High: Low to mid 40’s.
  • Tonight: Rising clouds, late wintry mix? Low: from 20 to 30.
  • Tomorrow: In the beginning mix north and west? Rain, heavy at times. Highs: 40s.

Today is the day to prepare for the cold and wind that arrives on Friday and lasts the weekend, because tomorrow looks like a rainy day. It’s not exactly hot today, with highs just in the low 40s, but it’s not terrible, with mostly sunny skies and light winds. Our northern and western suburbs can see a hint of wintry mix tomorrow morning before it changes to rain, so on Friday is when the Arctic front arrives, sending us into the deep freeze on Christmas Eve and Day.

Today (Wednesday): Another chill outside as we start from lows this morning around 20’s to nearly 30’s. Lots of sunshine does the best it can, pushing afternoon highs down to the mid 40’s with light winds. Confidence: High

Tonight: Clouds are building tonight and then skies become mostly cloudy overnight as the low pressure develops to the south. Light rain or a winter mix could hit the southern and western suburbs around 4 am. Overnight lows range between the 20s and 30s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Thursday): A brief period of wintry mix is possible, particularly north and west of DC, before 9am, but any significant ice concerns should be limited north of Frederick and west of Leesburg. For the metropolitan region, it becomes a rainy day, with rain increasing in coverage during the morning and heavy at times during the afternoon until evening. Afternoon temperatures are expected to rise into the high 40s, with winds blowing from the southeast in the late afternoon and into the evening. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: The rain moves from west to east during the night, but the sky remains cloudy overnight. Temperatures hover in the high 40s and 50s, thanks to a relatively mild breeze from the south. Confidence: Medium

Heavy rain showers come early Friday, between approximately 6 am and noon, possibly ending in snow showers. Can’t rule out a light coating on grass, especially north and west of DC. The main story is the drop in temperatures and gusts of wind. Most of us start our day in our 40s, but we are in our 20s to late 30s around lunchtime and into our teens to late 20s in the late afternoon or evening with clear skies. Westerly gusts, generally in the 30-40 mph range with some gusts around 50 mph possible, should dry out fairly well. But any remaining wet spots will almost certainly freeze (what we call a “flash freeze”) during the afternoon and into the evening. Confidence: Medium

Friday night winds continue to gust near or beyond 30 mph with mostly clear skies. Overnight lows plummet into the upper digits by mid-teens, with wind chills up the digits to as low as around -5 degrees. Confidence: Medium-High

christmas weekend it is partly sunny and absolutely cold. Both days begin with morning lows in the upper digits through the mid-teens, before struggling to afternoon highs in the low 20s to late 30s. chills in the single digits and teenagers all day long. Not as windy on Sunday, but still enough breeze to keep temperatures from dropping from the 10’s to the late 20’s. Confidence: Medium-High

High temperatures are expected to return from the 30s to close to the 40s on Monday and Tuesday.

A daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a scale of 0 to 10.

1/10 (🇧🇷🇧🇷 As the Arctic front moves through the area early on Friday, rain showers could turn into snow showers before ending. We don’t usually see buildup in situations like this, but we can’t rule out a light grass cover, especially north and west of DC
